GENERAL INFORMATION

Date:  April 17-20, 2007

Location:  Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Venue:  Ocean Blue Hotel

Objective:  The overall objective is to facilitate interactions between clinicians, biologists and chemists involved in Alzheimer's disease research.  We believe that a dialogue between the three different disciplines is critical for future therapeutics aimed at slowing down or preventing the progression of Alzheimer's disease.

The aim of the meeting is to provide an update on the current basic mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease and the applicability of novel drug discovery approaches to treat it.

Therefore, the focus will be set around four major themes:

  • Biological Mechanisms
  • Chemical Approaches
  • Drug Discovery
  • Clinical Applications

Language:  The official language of the meeting is English.  Mostly everyone in the hotel speaks English fluently.

Airlines:  More than 60 charter airlines fly to the airports of Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata and Punta Cana.

Visas and Documentation: Before entering the Dominican Republic at ports or airports, visitors are required to fill out embarkation/disembarkation forms. These must be filled out before entering the immigration line where a photo ID or passport must be presented.  Prior to immigration, a tourist card must also be purchased.

It is essential that visitors have $10 US dollars for each member of their party with which to pay this tax. No coins or other currency, including Dominican pesos, can be used. In addition, ATMs are usually found only outside the immigration area making it nearly impossible for visitors to get cash upon arrival. Travelers checks and credit cards are also not accepted.

Tourist Cards are available at booths near the immigration lines. While only one half of the document will be taken upon entry into the country, the other half will be taken upon departure. Therefore, it is imperative that visitors put this second half in a safe place for the duration of their trip. The Tourist Card is good for up to 15 days.

Time Zone: Punta Cana time is GMT-4.

Climate: The average annual temperature fluctuates between 18°C/65F and 27ēC/ 81F.  For many Dominicans, however, there is only one season: Summer!   April temperatures in Punta Cana range between 21°C/70F and 31°C/88F.

Currency: Official currency in the Dominican Republic is the Dominican Peso (DOP). There are several currency exchanges in hotels and well as banks and the whole downtown area.  The U.S. dollar is accepted at most tourist establishments and is often preferred.  Currency may be exchanged at Casas de Cambio (general hours: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.), banks (general hours: 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.).  Daily rates can be found at http://www.xe.com/ucc.   Major credit cards and travelers checks are also accepted at most major tourist areas in the country.  To avoid carrying a large amount of cash (not recommended), travelers should bring a mix of payment options.

Telephone:  Most hotels allow for direct dial from the rooms though the connecting cost as well as the cost per minute tend to be extremely high.  We recommend you purchase a telephone card which will allow you a much cheaper alternative to direct dial.  Please see concierge upon arrival - they should be able to sell these cards ($10 each) and provide you with dialing instructions.

Dress: The dress for the meeting will be business casual.

Voltage:  American-style plugs are used; power is 110-120 volts, 60 cycles.

Liability:  The meeting organizers and the secretariat will not accept liability for any personal injury, damage or loss that may occur during or directly arising from this meeting.

Letters of Invitation: Should you require an official invitation to participate at this meeting - to help you obtain the visa or submit to your institution - please request this by email (see below secretariat's details).  Note, however, that any such letter will not imply any commitment on the part of the meeting organizers to provide any financial support.
